The Porsche 918 Spyder Is The Worlds Fastest Hybrid

The term ‘Hypercar’ is not one to be used lightly but in the case of the Porsche 918 Spyder it is truly justified. It shattered the lap time for the fastest production car around the Nürburgring Nordschleife, completing the treacherous circuit in just 6min 57sec, a time that was 14 seconds faster than the existing ‘Ring record. This feat was achieved, according to Porsche, due to the 918’s Spyder’s hybrid powertrain.

The 918 Spyder is powered by a 4.6-litre naturally aspirated V8 that revs to 9150rpm and produces 599bhp. But it’s also boosted by two electric motors, one for each axle, which brings the total outputs of this Porsche Hypercar to 875bhp and 944lb ft. The chassis and body are made from carbonfibre, there’s agility enhancing rear-wheel steering, adaptive dampers and adaptive aerodynamics, and torque vectoring thanks to the two e-motors.

There has been a buzz around this car for some time and with rivals McLaren standing proudly behind their hybrid Hypercar the P1, the Porsche has to be something very special to come out on top. In reality the P1 and the 918 spyder are very different beasts. The Porsche 918 Spyder is a Hypercar that you could actually live with and drive on a regular basis, which is why Lifestyle magazine puts it at the top of the pile when it comes to the new crop of hybrid hypercars. However Ferrari’s Laferrari is looming and could be a game changer so watch this space.
